Police are appealing for more information as an investigation continues into a report of an unprovoked attack on a 13-year-old boy on the Isle of Wight.

The assault took place in the New Road area of Wootton Bridge at around 9.30pm on Saturday October 6, 2012 when it's alleged a group of teenage boys assaulted the 13-year-old, and burned his hand with a cigarette lighter.

The boy received bruising to his head, face and neck, and blisters to three fingers on his left hand. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Investigating officer PC Adam Brown said

"This was a vicious and cowardly unprovoked attack on a 13-year-old boy who has been left extremely upset by what happened.

"It's likely the suspects attracted the attention of other members of the public in the Wootton Bridge area in the lead up to the assault. I would like to hear from anyone who thinks they might have seen or heard them, or who knows their identities."

Police would like to thank the 13-year-old boy, his family, members of the public and partner agencies for their assistance with initial enquiries to establish more details in the community.

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Newport Police station by phoning 101. Mini-Com users can call the police on 01962 875000. Information can be given anonymously by calling the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111
