Airport Expects 40,000 Bank Holiday Passengers

More than 40,000 people are expected to travel through Southampton Airport this Bank Holiday weekend.

The unseasonably cold weather in Britain is expected to tempt holiday makers to jet off to foreign shores in search of the sun, whilst people are also expected to head off to visit friends and family around the country.

Sun-seeking passengers from Southampton will be making use of the summer sunshine routes including Palma, Ibiza and Menorca, many of which start this weekend, whilst travellers looking for sunshine city breaks can travel to popular destinations, including Barcelona and Nice.

Closer to home, popular half term destinations include Edinburgh and Glasgow as people get away for city breaks and to see family and friends. Guernsey and Jersey in the Channel Islands, always popular routes for Southampton Airport, are also expected to be busy.

In response to demand for five of the most popular sunshine destinations, Flybe have added extra flights to its Alicante, Malaga, Faro, Palma Mallorca and Nice routes.

Dave Lees, Managing Director, Southampton Airport said:

"Bank Holiday half term is always a popular time here and the combination of the half term break, the recent unseasonably gloomy weather, and the start of a number of our summer sun routes, means that we're expecting the airport to be busy this weekend."
