Children's Hospital Being Built In Southampton
A £70 million children's hospital is being built in Southampton.
A hospital spokesperson said:
"Our vision is to build a dedicated state-of-the-art children's hospital which will bring all our paediatric services under one roof for the first time."
Due for completion in 2020, it will be a centre of excellence for children on the south coast and beyond.
The children's hospital will be linked to Southampton General Hospital but will be purpose built with a separate entrance.
The new £70 million building will offer the highest quality hospital environment to young people, from babies to teenagers.
It will be situated on the east side of Southampton General Hospital with an exclusive entrance on B level and connected to the main hospital via a link corridor.
It will be identified by its child-friendly branding and an environment designed specifically for young patients and their families and will include facilities for cardiac surgery, neuroscience, oncology and a world-leading paediatric intensive care unit:
-Private patient facilities
-Medical day unit
-Medical and surgical units
-Teenage and young adult services
-Surgical day unit
-Children's cardiac services
-Paediatric intensive care unit (PICU)
-exclusive children's emergency department including assessment unit and x-ray facilities
Onsite Parent Hotel
Free accommodation will be available that allows families to be close by when children are in hospital.
It will not only be a regional hospital but will provide specialist care for children across the country.
A spokesperson said:
"We have seen many changes in the last 20 years and our patient numbers continue to grow year on year. These developments will strengthen our services for local children as well as improving the specialist care we provide for those further afield.
"Although based in Southampton, we will be working with healthcare professionals across the region to design models of care that enable children to be treated closer to home.
"Our staff will work alongside sub-specialist consultants in other hospitals so patients, whenever possible, are able to continue to enjoy their lives close to their friends and families."
MTR will run the franchise with First Group for seven years from August, taking over from Stagecoach.
