A council is apologising to parents after giving them the wrong dates to apply for their children’s school places.

Hampshire County Council has admitted the mistake, and a county council spokesperson said: "We apologise for any confusion caused by the error in our residents' magazine, Hampshire Now, regarding the deadline date for applications for Secondary school places for 2011.

"The correct date for parents of children due to transfer to secondary school to return their applications by  is Sunday, 31 October 2010.

"Hampshire Now is just one of many means we have of advising parents of the deadline for applications. Our main route is via information disseminated through our schools and this process has been underway for some time. Indeed some 4000 applications have already been started by parents using our online application process.

"Parents wanting further information about schools, the admissions process and an online application form can visit our website:  www.hants.gov.uk/admissions

"Alternatively they can call 0845 603 5623 to request an admissions brochure, an application form and a directory of schools."
