Hampshire and Isle of Wight Seatbelt Campaign
Police in Hampshire will be taking part in a Europe wide campaign this week (March 10-16) to crackdown on those who don't wear their seatbelt.
The enforcement week will run in the UK until the end of Sunday and officers from Hampshire's Roads Policing Unit will be out each day looking for those failing to comply with the seatbelt law.
Since 1983 it's been law to wear a seatbelt in a vehicle expect in a few rare exceptions.
Those caught not wearing one face a fine of up to £500 but more importantly they are putting themselves at risk of serious injury or death if their vehicle is involved in a crash.
Hampshire's Road Safety Officer, Sergeant Rob Heard said: "The campaign has been launched because research has shown that failure to wear a seatbelt is one of the main reasons why people die in road crashes.
"A recent national roadside survey showed on average 95% of people use a seatbelt but that's still 5% too many who aren't. They are putting themselves and others in real danger.
"There are a few exceptions for people in certain circumstances but for the vast majority it's essential they belt up to stay safe and avoid a hefty fine. Drivers also need to realise it's their responsibility to make sure children under 14 wear a seat belt or use a suitable child restraint.
"We will be handing out suitable advice and fixed penalty notices to those we see breaking the seatbelt law this week."
