Itchen Bridge Re-opened

Police have now fully re-opened the Itchen Bridge in Southampton after managing to get a man safely down who had climbed over the parapet onto some scaffolding at around 1am this morning, Monday, February 14.

Due to concerns for the man’s welfare and for his personal safety, the decision was made to close the bridge to allow police negotiators the opportunity to engage with the man and ultimately recover him to safety.

Due to the man’s precarious position on the bridge it proved difficult and took longer than expected.

At around 11.15 this morning the man was finally recovered safely.

Officers worked closely with partner agencies on this incident and they would also like to thank the public for their understanding whilst the bridge was shut to allow police to try and get the man down safely.
