Police are appealing for witnesses after a man out for his evening run was attacked in Southampton with a plank of wood.

A youth, aged about 16, on a cycle, approached him in the field he was running around off Wimpson Lane close to KFC on Sunday, May 15 at just before 10.30pm.

He asked the 28-year-old the time and then left. As the man reached the edge of the field and crossed Wimpson Lane he was suddenly hit with a plank of wood by a man. The victim ran from his attacker but he caught up with him and was attacked
further in the garden of a nearby house in Severn Road as he tried to raise the alarm by banging on the door.

The police were then called and the attacker left with another male who had a bike and is thought to have been the youth who had earlier asked him the time.

The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for bruising and swelling after being hit around the face with the wood and punched.

The man who attacked him is described as white, mid 20s, 6ft tall, short hair which was pushed forward at the front and clean shaven. Distinctively he was said to have bad teeth which were quite black.

Anyone who witnessed any of the incident of who knows who the man or youth might be is asked to call PC Marcus Morley from the Safer Neighbourhood Team at Shirley Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
