Man Dies After Falling From A Window

Police are investigating how a man died in Southsea.

Shortly after 11am (Sunday, May 16), a man was stopped whilst riding a bicycle in Victoria Road North, by officers on routine patrol.

The man ran from the officers, leaving behind his bicycle and some personal possessions. The officers followed for a short distance but were unable to locate him.

The officers carried out some local enquiries, which led them to visit a multi occupancy building in Grove Road North at around 12.20pm.

Whilst the officers were outside, the man who had earlier been stopped riding the bicycle, fell from a third floor window on to the car park below.

The officers immediately began giving first aid to the man, before South Central Ambulance Service attended and paramedics continued to give medical assistance, before taking the man to the Queen Alexandra hospital.

The man was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.

Police have named him as Jason Grant, 24, from Fawcett Road, Southsea.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed of the incident as a matter of course.

Portsmouth commander Chief Superintendent David Peacock said:

"First and foremost I would like to send my condolences to Jason's family, who I met with this morning.

"We appreciate that there are are a lot of questions that will need to be answered and there will be an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic outcome.”

Police are waiting for post mortem results.
