Man Dies After M27 Hard Shoulder Crash

Police are investigating a fatal crash at Junction 9 of the M27 eastbound on Sunday, February 27.

At around 6pm, the driver of a Ford Galaxy had pulled onto the hard shoulder to fix a problem with his vehicle and was about to pull away. His vehicle was hit by a Kia Picanto.

The driver of the Kia Picanto, an 84-year-old man from Southampton, was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, where he died from his injuries in the early hours of this morning, Monday, February 28.   

The driver of the Ford Galaxy, a 47-year-old man from Southampton and his passenger, a 33-year-old woman from Southampton, sustained minor injuries, with the passenger being taken to hospital in Southampton and later released.

Sergeant Mark Weller said:

“We need to hear from anyone who saw the collision itself or either vehicle in the time leading up to the collision. At this stage we do not know the reason why the driver of the Kia Picanto went on to the hard shoulder, and need witnesses to help us with our investigation.”
