Violent crime was up 37% in the last year. Police say it's mainly due to a change in how offences are recorded.
Man Jailed For Child Sex Offences
A 61-year-old Hampshire man has been imprisoned for two years and four months after being found guilty of child sex offences dating back to the 1970's.
Colin York, of Hoads Hill, Wickham, Fareham, was found guilty of 10 counts of indecency with a child and three counts of indecent assault and appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Friday (23 September) for sentencing. In addition to the custodial sentence, he was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years and was banned from working with children.
The offences took place between 1970 and 1972, on two boys aged between 10 and 13, when York was an assistant housemaster at Royal Alexandra and Albert School in Reigate.
York was found not guilty of two further offences of indecency with a child.
Detective Constable Trudie Harrison, who led the investigation, said:
"I hope this successful conviction and sentence sends a clear message that we will always conduct a full and thorough investigation into allegations of sexual abuse no matter how long ago the offence occurred.
"By pleading not guilty, York forced his victims to attend court and give evidence against him and I am full of praise for the courage and dignity they have shown throughout the process.
"York was in a position of trust when these offences were committed. This sentence will ensure he is not in a position to work with children again."
