Man Killed In New Forest Crash With Fire Engine
Hampshire Police and the Fire Service are working together to investigate a fatal crash involving a fire engine and a car.
A man in his twenties died on the A337 between Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst on Saturday night (22 August).
Hampshire Fire and Rescue say the crew were returning from dealing with a gas leak at a petrol station in Lymington.
A spokesperson said:
"At 22:57 on 22 August 2015 a crew from Winchester were returning from an emergency call which they had been attending in Lymington. Whilst on their way back to station, the fire appliance was involved in a road traffic collision when it was struck by a private vehicle on the A337 near Hollands Wood campsite.
"The driver of the vehicle, believed to be a man in his 20s, sadly died at the scene. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this traumatic time.
"One of the firefighters was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has subsequently been discharged. We are committed to the welfare of our firefighters and are supporting those who were involved in this tragic incident.
"We are working closely with Hampshire Constabulary who are leading an investigation to establish exactly what happened.
"The incident the crews were returning from was a gas leak at a petrol station in Wellworthy Road, Lymington. The firefighters had evacuated the area and isolated the leak. Crews were returning to their home station after dealing with the incident and did not have their blue lights on. Additional vehicles and stand by moves were arranged last night to ensure that the provision of emergency cover was maintained for Hampshire."
Hampshire Police said a section of road on the A337 near to Holland Wood Campsite was closed in both directions between Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst after the collision, between a Ford Puma and a fire engine.
Hampshire Constabulary and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service are working together to establish the circumstances.
