New Forest Pony Foal Left To Die

Hampshire Constabulary is appealing for information after a New Forest pony foal was found fatally wounded following a collision with a vehicle, which then drove off.

The discovery was made at Sunny Bushes on the B3079 on Tuesday (Nov 30th)

The Bay filly foal was so badly injured it had to be immediately put down.

A passing motorist found the dying animal shortly before midnight and called police. An agister attended and humanely destroyed the foal.

Police believe the offending vehicle was travelling towards Cadnam at the time of the collision. A piece of trim from a Volkwagen was found close by and police are looking to trace the driver.

PC Alison Tilbury, said: “It is a requirement for motorists to report any accident involving New Forest ponies as well as donkeys, cattle and pigs.

Anyone who fails to do so is liable to prosecution and we will always seek to identify and actively pursue offenders.

"This may have been an accident but the foal was left to suffer, possibly for quite some time, before a member of the public found her.

“Sadly the foal’s injuries were simply too severe and she was humanely put down.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, any drivers who think they may have hit something in this area without realising it or anyone with any information which they
think may help us.

"In the meantime, I'd urge all drivers to take great care at all times when driving across the New Forest but especially during spells of adverse weather.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact PC Alison Tilbury on 101.
