The chairman of Hampshire's police federation is calling for more support for officers who are attacked.
Nine were assaulted in eight separate incidents over the course of the Bank Holiday weekend (2-4 May 2015). One officer was hospitalised with concussion as a result of an attack.
John Apter said officers who have been assaulted should be treated as proper victims of crime, and that there is no room for the attitude that such attacks are simply “part of the job”.
Mr Apter added:
“Policing is a tremendously difficult job. When colleagues are assaulted it’s important and essential that they get the right support, not only from the federation but also from the force and the judicial system as a whole.
“They put themselves in the line of danger to protect the public and they deserve the best support.”
Mr Apter will be addressing the issue of police officer assaults on stage at the Police Federation of England and Wales conference in less than a fortnight.
