Free fun National Playdays are being held around the Chichester District during the summer holidays.

Chichester District Council is organising the three events as part of National Playday 2010, a national campaign to celebrate children’s right to play. This year’s theme is ‘Our Place’.

Councillor Nick Thomas, Chichester District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture and Sport, says: “Children are at the heart of our community spaces. We need to support children to develop their own independence and freedom to play outdoors where they live.”

The activities will be held on:

Wednesday 4 August at Chichester College, Chichester;
Friday 6 August at Manhood Community College, Selsey; and,
Tuesday 10 August at Midhurst Rother College, Midhurst.

The afternoons, which are free to children, families and young people, run from 12 - 4pm. These events will also give ideas for free and fun activities to do at home.

With much valued support from many local groups, childcare nurseries and organisations, there will be many fun-filled play options available.

These include:

West Sussex Fire Service providing water play;
Westgate Leisure fun activities;
activities organised by Chichester District Museum;
mobile skate park;
sand pits donated by Covers;
The Play Team clay workshops sponsored by HydeMartlett;
Woodhorn Group providing gardening activities;
Nature’s Way are giving away bags of fruit;
A climbing wall;
football sessions;
den building; and,
cheerleading skills.

Cllr Thomas adds: “Chichester District Council is delighted to support National Playday across our District. I hope that many families will go along to make the most of what’s on offer and take away some ideas for their own play activities. So why not bring a picnic along with you and the family and have a day of fun.”

It is recommended that you bring refreshments, sun cream and suitable clothing for the children to play.
