Residents Catch Out Speeding Drivers
Another Community Speedwatch scheme’s started on the South Coast, with volunteers in Horndean using equipment supplied by police to check the speed of cars in the area.
Anyone caught over the limit will be sent a warning letter.
Similar schemes are already running in other parts of Hampshire and in Dorset. Police say they help curb speeding motorists and make the roads safer for everyone in the community.
Sergeant Gavin Parkes, who is running the new scheme, said:
"It has consistently been shown from feedback sessions with local residents and councillors that speeding is the biggest priority the community want us to address. Community Speedwatch is one avenue in helping us achieving this.
“Of course Speedwatch is not a replacement for current police action around speeding and road safety. If anything, our capacity to deal with this issue has increased due to local officers being additionally trained, along with the assistance of the Road Policing Unit and Safer Road Partnership.
"The aim of Speedwatch is to educate - not to penalise - and vehicles travelling above the speed limit will either receive advisory letters, or if caught more than once, further letters or visits by the local police team to highlight the situation and potential consequences of their actions.”
