Soldier To Be Sentenced For Bournemouth Murder

A soldier will be sentenced today for murdering his girlfriend in a frenzied knife attack in Bournemouth as their children were sleeping upstairs.

Jay Nava, 27, killed Natasha Wake, 26, during a row after she learned he was being investigated over an allegation of sexual assault, Dorset Police said.

Nava, of the Royal Artillery's 29 Commando Regiment, will be sentenced at Winchester Crown Court after being found guilty of murder.

Police found Ms Wake's body covered by a duvet in an under-stairs cupboard in the couple's home in Bournemouth on October 2.

She had 11 stab wounds to her chest as well as injuries to her face and defensive wounds on her hands.

Physically abusive Nava took their three children, one they had together as well as one each from previous relationships, to his grandparents' home.

He then called his mother in Australia to say he had killed her a day earlier, police said.

Family in England were contacted and then raised the alarm.

The day before Ms Wake's murder, she discovered that Devon and Cornwall Police was investigating Nava over the sexual assault claim made against him in May.

This may have acted as a catalyst for an argument that occurred on the evening she was killed, the jury was told.

Police began searching for Nava after the mother's body was found at their home in Harley Gardens and they found him in woodland having made an unsuccessful attempt at taking his life.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Derbyshire said: "Jay Nava lost control of his temper and subjected Natasha to a brutal and sustained attack.

"His violent actions that day have very sadly left two young children without their mother."
