Southampton Maritime Festival Gets Underway
More than 12,000 visitors are expected at the Southampton Maritime Festival over the next two days.
The Festival takes place on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 August from 10:30-18:00. Inside the ABP's Dock Gate 4 visitors will be able to explore areas of the port normally off-limits to the public.
The festival will be opened by the Mayor of Southampton on Friday at an 11:30am ceremony to commemorate Southampton's part in WW1 and D-Day.
Nick Ridehalgh, ABP Director Southampton, said:
"The fact that the Maritime Festival is being held at the port is so relevant, particularly to the heritage aspect of the event. Over the last 175 years the Port of Southampton has played a huge role in the city's history, helping to shape its very identity.
"The port has touched every step in Southampton's timeline and evidence of that remains at the port to this day. We're delighted to be able to open our gates to all for the Maritime Festival and let the public see the rich heritage we have on our doorstep."
Garry Momber, representative of he Southampton Heritage Federation, said:
"We're so pleased to hold the festival for a second year running - especially in this year of major historical landmarks and commemorations, the timing could not be more apt.
"We were staggered by sheer numbers of residents and visitors coming down to the docks last year and, with lots of different things to see and do this year, we hope that people come down once again to appreciate the history of our region."
The festival celebrates and remembers Southampton's rich history with the sea. If you are a history enthusiast, you can:
