A woman found stabbed to death in her home was named as police questioned a man over the killing.

Maria Lakatos, 37, was found unconscious with stab wounds by officers who were called to an address in Harcourt Road, Bitterne, Southampton, just before lunchtime on Wednesday.

Paramedics from South Central Ambulance attempted to resuscitate Ms Lakatos, who was originally from Hungary, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. A 37-year-old man arrested in connection with the death remained in custody and officers have been granted extra time to question him, a Hampshire Police spokesman said.

The house has been sealed off by officers as specialist investigators carried out a forensic examination of the scene.

Inspector Mark Hull said: ''Police would like to hear from anyone living or working in the Harcourt Road area who may have seen or heard anything unusual, or anyone acting suspiciously.''
