Student Dies After Fall From Portsmouth Uni Building

A student has died after falling from a building at the University of Portsmouth.

20-year-old Matthew Cole fell from Mercantile House in Hampshire Terrace yesterday afternoon.

The emergency services were called to the area in the city centre at 3.54pm on Monday 13 January.

Police are investigating what happened.

The University of Portsmouth's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Galbraith, said:
 
"It is with great sadness that I have to confirm the tragic death of one of our students, Matthew Cole.

"Matthew, 20, was a final year forensic psychology student who was described by his tutor as a personable and friendly student who was progressing well with his studies.

"The University community of staff and students feel a deep sense of shock at this tragic loss of life. We send our heartfelt condolences to Matthew's family and friends who have the full support of the University at this difficult time."
