Hampshire Police are investigating reports a man in a white van followed a 12-year-old girl in Fair Oak and asked her to get in.

The girl was walking along Fair Oak Road at around 12.45pm on Tuesday 27 August, from the Shorts Road junction into Allington Lane when the van drove up to her.

The man driving tried to get her attention by whistling at her and then drove slowly on the opposite side of the road trying to talk to her and asking her to get into the vehicle. She ignored him and he eventually drove off as traffic built up behind him. She went to the house of a friend and reported the incident to the police.

Police are advising that parents should remain alert but not alarmed as such incidents are rare in the area.

The van is described as white, quite large and dirty. The driver is said to be in his 40s with pale white skin. He had a deep voice, stubble, a large nose and black hair which was gelled back. He was bare-chested at the time and his right arm was covered in tattoos.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses such as those who may have been driving behind the van or seen it in the area. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact PC Stephen Swift at Eastleigh police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. They are also urging the driver of the van to contact them directly.
