Police are looking for a man who helped a woman, attacked in Southampton in front of a mum and four children.

He stopped one woman assaulting another in Paynes Road, near the junction of Shirley Road at about 3.40pm on Monday 17 June.

The man was in Paynes Road when he saw the assault.  He went to the assistance of the victim and physically removed the woman who was attacking her.

The man is described as white and stocky with short brown hair and aged in his late thirties.  He left in a silver and blue people carrier.

At the time of the assault, the 26-year-old victim was walking with a woman friend and the friend's four children, aged one to eight.  Witnessing and hearing the shouting and the assault made the children cry.

The victim received numerous blows to her head and torso.

PC Greg Pinnell is appealing for the Good Samaritan to contact him.

"This was a nasty incident that left the victim and those with her in a frightened state.  The man who stopped the assault is an important witness, and his assistance would help the police investigation," PC Pinnell said.

The man and any other witnesses are asked to contact PC Pinnell at Shirley police station on 101.
