The victim, 50, reports she was assaulted in an alleyway off North End Avenue sometime between 11pm and midnight by a man she had met moments earlier.

She had spent the later part of evening at the Avenue Hotel pub opposite Alexandra Park and had left to call a taxi home.

The suspect is described as:

-White man

-About 6ft 2ins tall

-Short, dark brown hair

-Slim build

-Wearing a blue top with white horizontal stripes

DS Fiona Holland from Portsmouth CID said:

“From our investigation so far, we understand the woman met the man and walked with him a short distance to the alleyway.

“Officers were called to the scene and located the victim. She has since been receiving specialist support and is now recovering.

“Our enquiries have focused on piecing together what happened and tracing the suspect.

“We’ve been speaking to local residents and would now like to hear from anyone else who may be able to help the investigation.

“I’m particularly keen to talk to anyone who’d been at the Avenue Hotel that evening and who may have seen either the victim, a man matching that description or both of them together in the area at the time.

“All calls will be treated in the strictest confidence.”
