Woman's Necklace Stolen In Street

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a woman's necklace being stolen from around her neck in daylight on a Southampton street.

The 64-year-old Asian woman was walking in Derby Road between 6 and 7pm on Monday, August 20, when two women approached her.

They distracted her by asking directions. One woman then embraced the victim, calling her 'Mum'.

During the embrace, the gold necklace, valued at £1,000, was taken from her neck.

The two women are described as tanned or of Asian appearance. They were between 35 and 40 years of age. Both had dark, shoulder-length hair and were about 5ft 3ins tall.

PC Claire Sheehy said: "The incident took place during daylight hours at a time when people would have been returning home for the day.

"They may have witnessed the three women and the embrace, thinking it involved family members.

"The victim was dressed in a lilac outfit with a lilac scarf over her head.

"If anyone did see the incident as they passed, we need to hear from them.

"We also would remind people to remain vigilant when approached by strangers, even when walking in daylight hours."

Anyone with information about the incident or the gold necklace is asked to contact PC Sheehy at Southampton Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line on 0800 555 111.
