Youths Throw Stone Off Motorway Bridge

Police are appealing for information after a car was hit with a stone as the driver passed beneath a bridge on the M27 at Hedge End.

The incident occurred between 8.30am and 8.40am on Wednesday September 1.

The victim, a 46-year-old woman from New Milton, was driving east bound on the M27 when she saw two youths on the Botley Road bridge.

As she drove under the bridge, the youths threw a stone at her car causing the sunroof to smash.

PC Alex Hennessey said:

“The actions of those responsible for this incident were extremely dangerous; the sunroof shattered and covered the victim in glass leaving her very shaken, but fortunately on this occasion no one was injured.

“However, this incident could have been much worse, what may have seemed like a fun game could have caused serious injury or even death. I cannot stress too strongly just how dangerous it is to throw objects from motorway bridges.

“I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this incident, or who has any information about it.

“I would also appeal to parents to talk to their children about the consequences and potential dangers of this behaviour. Anyone caught throwing objects onto the motorway will be dealt with robustly.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact PC Alex Hennessey at Eastleigh police station on 101. Alternatively you can call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
