Police and paramedics were called to an area off the Caerphilly Mountain Road, in the early hours of Sunday following concerns for the girl's health.

The teenager, who has not been named, died a short time later.

Gwent Police said the circumstances surrounding her death are not yet known, and during the incident four people were taken to hospital for checks following concerns for their health.

They were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of drugs and have since been released pending further investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Brain, who is leading the investigation, said: "At this time inquiries are ongoing and the investigation into this young girl's death are still in the early stages.

"During our work we will be looking into whether any substances have been a contributing factor into this incident, however this is just one of our lines of inquiry at this time.

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time."

Ms Brain said a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.
