THURSDAY 9TH FEBRUARY 2012 - TORBAY HERALD EXPRESS - CAROLINE COOK
‘Roses are red, violets are blue. I’ve made you a present with paper and glue!’ ‘You shouldn’t have….no really, you shouldn’t have.’
My other half is a master of many things, but gift giving isn’t one of them. One birthday, I dropped hints regarding a beautiful but inexpensive silver watch. He heard only the word ‘watch’ and produced a giant plastic affair that could, he proudly announced ‘withstand any shock’ not the shock of failing to be pretty and silver it couldn’t.
One Christmas I coveted beautiful knee high boots in shiny black buttersoft leather and what should appear under the tree? A sturdy pair of walking boots, colour dirty plasticine. ‘Well you do have weak ankles and I wanted you to be fully protected on all those long hikes we’ll be going on’.
Finally, Valentines Day: I knew this wouldn’t be good as G breaks out in a rash when faced with commercialised holidays; imagine my delight though when he announced he’d made me jewellery. G is very talented when it comes to craftsmanship. He is a trained blacksmith, a superb carpenter and quite the artist, but bracelet making was new territory. The design I revealed when removing the tissue paper was faultless, if only he’d made it silver instead of iron. I tired very hard to wear and admire it convincingly. Sadly the bracelet hit the floor along with my arm and I struggled to hold it aloft more than a foot above ground.
This year I’ll happily settle for dinner at home and a bunch of flowers. Although I do wear the walking boots which have prevented sprained ankles for years, the watch has survived several horse-riding falls and fared better than I. And the bracelet…. well it’s a very useful door-stop.
