Track and Field Athletics is always the biggest spectator attraction in any Olympics and providing some of the iconic moments of the Games, played out in front of a stadium-full of spectators .

Getting involved in athletics is usually pretty straightforward. Despite the mergers of many clubs in the last 20 years or so, there are still plenty out there and there's bound to be one within a few miles of where you live. Use the UK Athletics Club Search here

The beauty about athletics is that it's made up of a number of events - short sprints, middle and long-distance races, throwing and jumping - even walking - disciplines. If you're a genuine all-rounder, you can even become a decathlete or heptathlete.

In the UK, there's an effective system of coaching from grassroots up to full-time athletes in every event...and your local club is the automatic centre for finding out what's available. Clubs are all amateur so also welcome voluntary help in all aspects of athletics, including officiating. it's a great place to go to as a family. Even if you don't want to get actively running, jumping or throwing, you can learn how to measure and record the achievements of those taking part.
