Water sports

Thanks to the performances of the likes of Becky Adlington, David Davis and Tom Daley in Beijing and since,  swimming and diving are now regarded as sports the UK can do well in during London 2012.

Water sports in general are well catered for in this country, though to be a competitive swimmer you may have to be a little more dedicated than most athletes.

Because most swimming pools have to give preference to the paying public, club swimmers are often forced to swim at strange times of the day and you often hear tales of dedicated parents and their offspring heading off to the pool at four in the morning just to get the pool time they need.

So for the serious swimmer, it can be a little demanding...but for families, swimming pools and open-air lidos are generally well-maintained and affordable in the UK and provide a great morning or afternoon trip with some fantastic cardio-vascular exercise.

British Gas are currently sponsoring a huge campaign to get more Britons in to the pool..it's called The Big Splash and you can find out more about it here

Diving is a very technical sport but the Amateur Swimming Association has produced a fun introduction called Flip N Fun designed for 5 to 11 year olds to get them started on the road to becoming the next Tom Daley.

Open water swimming is enjoying a revival and certainly captured everyone's imagination at the last Olympics in Beijing. The demands of swimming in lakes, rivers, docks, even the sea, can be great so it's probably for the more experienced swimmer. Learn more about open water swimming here

Synchronised swimming is now well-established as an Olympic sport and it's a great discipline for those who want to work in a team environment. See more about synchro here
