White water rafting

For some people - some families - a leisurely game of tennis just doesn't cut it.

Active adventure holidays for families are becoming more popular - and something like white water rafting is now in reach of more people - though it still takes a bit of effort as there aren't a lot of places dealing with the sport.

You could trust to nature and go on an actual river (visit the National White Water Centre website here ), or try out one of the custom-built arenas such as Lee Valley in North London.

The latter has only just opened to the public in readiness for staging the Olympics event in August 2012, so you can experience the same course as the Olympic athletes will be battling against this time next year. Visit the Lee Valley White Water Centre website here

The Centre advises allowing half a day to be briefed and trained before going on the actual course. You don't need the equipment - helmets, life-jackets are all provided - just bring your swimming cossy and a towel.

Anyone over the age of 14 can take part, so families with older children can have a great day out. You must be prepared to get very wet and have confidence being in open water.
