Carried out by researchers at the Neuromed Institute in Pozzilli, Italy, the study found that there is no ink between eating pasta an putting on weight.

In fact, they went as far as to say that those who ate pasta on a regular basis (in moderation though) were found to have a 'lower waist circumference and better waist-hip ratio.'

This was partly down to the fact that those who ate pasta consumed it as part of a healthy Mediterranean diet. However, the study also finds that pasta isn't all bad for you, regardless of whether you are on a healthy Mediterranean diet.

George Pounis, lead author of the report, said: ‘By analysing anthropometric data of the participants and their eating habits we have seen that consumption of pasta, contrary to what many think, is not associated with an increase in body weight, rather the opposite.

‘Our data shows that enjoying pasta according to individuals’ needs contributes to a healthy body mass index, lower waist circumference and better waist-hip ratio.’

Okay, so there may be a little bit of self interest in this study, what with it being carried out by Italians who also just happen to be the biggest pasta exports but hey! If science says it's okay, then who are we to deny it?

The study was published in the Nutrition & Diabetes journal.
