The 81-year-old opened up to Good Housekeeping magazine, saying that families should also ban deep fat fryers because they encourage bad eating habits.

She said: "I honestly think there shouldn’t be sugared drinks. All my grandchildren drink water all through the day. I’ve just had them to stay and at breakfast they have water. They don’t even know what sugary drinks are."

Of course, Mary is presented with delicious cakes all day long on the Great British Bake Off, so how does she resist temptation and stay so trim?

Apparently her trick is eating big bowls of soup at lunchtime and snacking on small plates loaded with vegetables at regular intervals during the show.

Mary also has some choice words about diets..."Freak diets, I don't think work. It's control."

Wise words, we reckon!
