How Much Sugar Is Really In Britain's Favourite Foods?
They're the staples in our food cupboards, the go-to dinner ingredients but do you really know how much of the sweet stuff they're hiding?
In a bid to combat obesity, Public Health England have released an app that allows you to scan the barcode of food products to see how much sugar they each contain. The app converts the grams of sugar in each product into 4g sugar cubes, so that it's easier to understand.
Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons and the Co-operative are among the shops that have signed up to the 'Change4Life' app campaign, alongside manufacturers such as Weetabix and Flora.
Using the new Change4Life app, Heart hit the high street supermarkets to find out how much sugar really is in our food.

A lot of us choose to ditch breakfast and replace it with cereal bars but what many people don't know is that they're loaded with sugar. This is how much sugar five days worth of Belvita breakfast biscuits contain.
'Fitstagrammer' Clean Eating Alice is a strong believer in breakfast.
She says: "I find myself slightly disheartened when I’m on my way to work and see people tucking into their deceptively healthily branded cereal bars that can contain as much sugar as a bar of chocolate.
"We all live incredibly busy lives, but even saving just five minutes in the morning to ensure you can fuel yourself properly for the day ahead can make all the difference, to your body and mind."
A jar of Sun-Pat peanut butter contains more sugar than you might think.
"Opting for a breakfast that is nutrient dense and high in protein and/or complex carbohydrates, for example eggs, porridge or a good quality greek yogurt, will ensure you are far more energised for the day ahead," says Alice.
"If you do find yourself with a sweet tooth that needs satisfying, opt for natural sources to sweeten up your breakfast with fruit in your porridge for example."
During the cold winter months, there's nothing quite like warming the cockles with a nice bowl of soup.
However, if you're replacing bread with soup to help shift the pounds you may like to know how much sugar is really in those ready-made soups.
Although the app found that in a loaf of Hovis Best of Both bread there are around 7.5 sugar cubes, users must remember to take it into consideration that that amount isn't per slice.
One of the results that was quite surprising was the amount of sugar found in a 360g jar of Branston Original Pickle .
In total, a jar contains 86.4g of sugar - or 23.5g per 100g. That's the equivalent to around two chocolate Twix originals fingers.
It's the battle of the squashes: if you're concisous about the amount of sugar you're taking in then you might like to switch from Ribena to Robinson's Orange No Added Sugar squash which contains much less sugar.
While a can of Diet Coke has no sugar, just one 330ml can of Coca-Cola contains 34.8g of sugar - that's the equivalent to around 7 teaspoons of sugar.
While Ryvita Original is very low in sugar, it's a packet of it's moorish, sweeter product in the range, Ryvita Fruit Crunch , contains almost 10 whole sugar cubes worth of the added sweetness!
Even snacking on tube of Texas BBQ Sauce Pringles will add 8.4g of sugar to your diet.
Tracy Parker, Dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, advises to be wary about the amount of sugar in ready made sauces.
"There are high amounts of sugar (and salt) hidden in even supposedly healthy foods like a jar of tomato sauce," says Tracey.
"Using the colour coded front of pack nutrition labelling can help you make a healthier choice when it comes to buying food. But nothing beats cooking your own food – it is a great way of knowing exactly what is going into your meals."
Even by adding just one packet of Old El Paso's Smoky BBQ Fajita Seasoning to your food will add 18.8g of sugar to you meal.
Although condiments add flavour to a meal, they contain more sugar that you may think.
