Why Going To Sleep On An Argument Is Bad For Your Health
Scientists prove why there's more to this saying than meets the eye.
According to new research, going to bed on a disagreement isn't only bad for your relationship, but it could be detrimental to your health too.
After observing more than 600 married and cohabiting couples, scientists have found that individuals who experience arguments, tension and feelings of being threatened are less likely to have the 'restorative' sleep needed for our Physical and Psychological wellbeing and health.
Individuals who were paid more attention by their partners on the other hand, were more likely to achieve a deeper more 'restorative' sleep.
So what is this restorative sleep you ask?
According to studies published in the 'Social Personality and Psychological Science' journal, one of the most crucial functions of sleep is protect us against deterioration in health. However, this type of protective sleep can only happen when we have a high quality of uninterrupted sleep known as restorative sleep.
Restorative sleep requires feelings of security, safety and protection - feelings that can be strongly sourced from a responsive social partner such as a parent or romantic partner.

“Having responsive partners who would be available to protect and comfort us should things go wrong is the most effective way for us humans to reduce anxiety, tension and arousal.” says lead author Dr Emre Selçuk, a developmental and social psychologist at Middle East Technical University in Turkey commented.
