How To Get Over A Break-Up
We're here to help with our top tips for getting over your ex. From blocking them on Facebook to giving back their gifts, here's how to close the door firmly with your dignity intact...
1. Unfriend them from your life
In the age of social media and mobile phones it’s no longer a matter of just avoiding your ex at the supermarket. Now we have Facebook posts, Instagram selfies and snapchats to dodge. Do yourself a favour and unfriend, unfollow and block any and all ways you might come into contact with your former partner.
When going through a break-up it can be tempting to drown your sorrows with ice cream or wine, and that’s fine. We all do it from time to time, just don’t do it alone. Get your friends over for a drink, a chat and maybe a cry, and you’ll avoid feeling too down as well as drunkenly texting your ex later.
2. Focus on a new task
The best way to take your mind off a break-up is to throw yourself into something new. There’s a reason people’s careers skyrocket after a break-up but you don’t have to start pulling all nighters to stop thinking about your ex. Why not train for a marathon or write that book you’ve been planning?
3. Don’t hide what you’re feeling
You’re bound to feel upset, mad, relieved and everything in-between after a break-up but don’t pretend you’re fine. If you need to stay occupied so you’re not crying at work, fine, but when you get home write it all down. You’ll feel better and you can be totally honest because no-one else will see it.
4. Get rid of the memories
After a break-up it’s tempting to hold onto all the keepsakes from your relationship like photos and gifts but this is just stopping you from moving on. Give them back to your ex or get rid of them entirely and you’ll get over them quicker, plus, all the important memories will stay locked inside your head.
5. Let go of the past
Your relationship is over. Whether it was good or bad, you can’t go back and change things, so the best way to get over it is to let go of all the anger and bitterness you might still be feeling. Once you can do that, you’re truly ready to move forward.
