Could THIS Be The Reason Why You're Always Late?

Good news if you're one of those tardy people who always leaves a mate standing around waiting for you and are always embarrassed about just how late you are, every single time. You just can't seem to help it.

There have been many theories about "late" people tossed around recently. We've heard everything from they're more creative to optimistic types and more fun than people who are punctual. 

We all know what it feels like to be the one left waiting when you turn up at mutually agreed time and we've often been able to think of other words to describe tardy folks!

If you find yourself repeating the same behaviour over and over and vowing every single time to try hard not to be late next time, then you may have just been provided with a scientific reason as to why you're so hopeless at being on time.  

Science has spoken and a team of neuroscientists at BPS Research Digest  undertook a very complicated piece of research (published in the journal Hippocampus) which in a nutshell says that it's very easy to underestimate the time it takes to get anywhere.

According to their study people tend to underestimate how long it will take to travel the more familiar routes. The laws of time and space do not actually bend in order to transport you to work or school more quickly, but apparently "late" people actually believe that they will.

And yet the oddest part of this new study is that while the participants regularly over estimated the physical length of those routes, they on the whole underestimated how long it would take to travel them. 

At least you've now got a science backed excuse that you can trot out every time you rock up late. 

You can simply baffle them with science and say in your best Doctor Who voice... 

I would’ve liked to have been on time, but the thing is, my brain has separate neural systems for estimating spatial extent and time-to-travel through that space. You know how it is!
