This Is The Perfect Age Gap In A Relationship... Apparently
Age is but a number when you're in love, right? Apparently not.
A study conducted by Emory University in Atlanta has found that there is a perfect age gap between lovers that will increase your chances of a lasting relationship.
3,000 people took part in the study which found that the greater the age gap in the relationship, the more likely it is to fail. Researchers have put this down to different interests and conflicting goals because both partners are at different stages in their lives.
If you and the love of your life falls into any of these categories then you might not like the statistics...
Researchers found that couples with an age gap of five years are 18% more likely to break up than a couple of the same age, and that number only increases as the age gap gets bigger. Partners who have a 10 year age gap are 39% more likely to break up than an equal age couple and a 20 year age gap only increases the figures to a whopping 95% fail rate.
So what's the ideal age? The scientists found that couples with just one year difference in age are the most likely to have a long lasting relationship with only 3% of couples going through a divorce.
Still, this is just data and it doesn't necessarily reflect everyone's relationship. Whilst researchers noticed the patterns, they can't be sure that the results speak for everyone. Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, 46, and director Michael Douglas, 71, have been married for 16 years, despite the 25 year age gap.
One of the researchers behind the study, Hugo Mialon, said: "It could just be that the types of couples with those characteristics are the types of couples who are, on average, more likely to divorce for other reasons."
