YSL wins round one over Louboutin

Shoe maker to the star can't stop other designers from using red soles on footwear

French shoe designer Christian Louboutin was defeated in the first round of his court battle against Yves Saint Laurent.

The high end cobbler is trying to get an injunction over designers who also use his trademark red soles. However the YSL camp has argued that they started using the scarlett colour years before Louboutin and whilst a design can be trademarked, having monopoly over a colour is simply impossible.

Louboutin's designs are currently the footwear of choice of many a Hollywood celebrities, with the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Beyoncé Knowles, Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz all sporting the famous red soled 6 inches stilettos.

Louboutin and Yves Saint Laurent's executives will appear in court in New York for round two next week.
