If You Have Trouble Sleeping, Pink Noise Could Be Just What You Need
Forget white noise! A study has found that PINK NOISE is the sound you should play to get more sleep.
Chances are that anyone who’s had trouble sleeping has heard about the virtues of white noise, which is said to help induce some much-welcome drowsiness for the sleep-deprived.
It sounds strange, listening to noise – which could be distracting – in a bid to nod off. Yet, according to the website Popular Science , it’s the consistent nature of the sound that helps us to drift off.
“It's not the noise itself that wakes you up, per se, but the sudden change or inconsistencies in noise that jar you,” the website claims. “White noise creates a masking effect, blocking out those sudden changes that frustrate light sleepers, or people trying to fall asleep.”
But a recent report from the science journal Frontiers in Neuroscience has claimed that PINK NOISE is actually a more useful sound to play in the background while you attempt to join the Land of Nod. Well, it’s certainly a more glam colour!
Pink noise, though similar to white noise, is a less harsh sound, almost evoking the noise of waves lapping on the beach.
The study found that improved sleep is not the only benefit of listening to white noise in bed at night. The magical sound can even improve your memory!
This is because sleep-dependent memory retention is improved by catching those extra Zs. As such, Frontiers in Neuroscience found that test subjects’ who’d had a night after deep sleep induced by pink noise scored three times better in memory tests than those who had not.
The findings should be particularly beneficial in the UK, as a report published last year claimed that we are among the world’s worst sleepers.
A survey of 1000 people aged 18 and over concluded that 37% of people in Britain have trouble sleeping, compared to just 9% of people in India, the country that scored the best.
If you’re one of the 37%, play this YouTube video in the background while you sleep tonight. It’s 10 hours of pink noise and might do the trick!
