East: Man & Woman Get Awards from Queen

A man from Norwich and a woman from Eye in Suffolk have been named this morning on the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Christine Hazel Bird is to become among the first people in 20 years to be awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM).

She has served the communities of Brome and Eye for the past 38 years.  Since 1973 she has been a member of the Community Council in Brome, and since moving to Eye in 1995 has been Chair of the Board of Governors at Eye CEVAC Primary School, visiting the school most days to observe lessons and hear children read.

The BEM awards have been reintroduced to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to honour volunteers who make a real difference to their communities

It is also going to Derrick Francis Vernall has worked tirelessly to improve the facilities for sport, education and social activities for the inhabitants of and visitors to Horning, Essex, and has been the driving force in reviving the Horning Bowls Club and organising improvements to the village hall.
