A man has been released on bail after a young boy died after being hit by a van.

The child, believed to be aged under two years old, was in a field in Ipswich when the incident happened at about 12.45pm.

There were a number of vehicles and caravans in the area at the time.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, he has been released on police bail pending further investigations, and is due to return to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre in October.

Police have cordoned off the area.

The East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the family of the child involved at this very tragic time.”

Gary added: “Following extensive treatment at the roadside by land and air ambulance crews, the child was pronounced dead at the scene."
