A successful stage musical about Ipswich serial killer Steve Wright's murder spree is being made into a film.

London Road, the name of the Ipswich street where Wright lived, was based on recorded interviews with local people and was a sell-out success at the National Theatre.

Wright was found guilty of murdering five women who all worked as prostitutes in February 2008.

The naked bodies of the women, who worked in the Ipswich red light area, were found in isolated locations near the town between December 2 and December 12 2006.

The theatre has scored several notable successes in transferring its stage hits to the big screen with Alan Bennett's The History Boys moving from there to Broadway, the West End and eventually to the cinema in a film version starring James Corden and Richard Griffiths.

Other hits include War Horse, which was recently filmed by Steven Spielberg and featured Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch.

The film of London Road is being developed by the theatre with BBC Films and Cuba Pictures.
