Mildenhall: Man Pretends To Be Police Officer

Suffolk Police is issuing an e-fit likeness of a man who impersonated a police officer in Mildenhall.

The man attended the address of a 20-year-old woman on Woodlands Way on Thursday 19th July after an internet pop-up appeared on her laptop that appeared to be from the Metropolitan police.

The pop-up ordered her to pay a £100 fine for looking at pornography or her computer would be 'locked'.

The victim called the number provided and refused to pay the fine. A man claiming to be a police officer appeared at her home address the following day. The man did not provide an ID and was wearing a high-visibility tabard with the word 'Police' instead of a full uniform.

He showed the woman a list of alleged pornographic sites with her internet router number.

The victim paid the fine using the 'Paysafe' website. The payment was stopped after the incident was reported.

Suffolk Police is urging residents to always ask for a photo ID. No police force would ever lock a personal computer or ask for payment of fines through online vouchers such as 'Ukash' of 'Paysafe'.

Calls with information can be made to DC Sarah Shepperson on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
