Police have today named the woman found dead at Needham Lake on Sunday 20th February as Ruth Jacobs.

The body of Mrs Jacobs, who was 60 and lived in Ipswich, was found in the lake near Coddenham Road in Needham Market just before 8am on Sunday. Cordons at the lake have now been lifted.

At 3.45pm on Sunday police attended Wissett Lake and a 58-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has since been detained under the Mental Health Act and is no longer in police custody.

A post mortem examination has shown Mrs Jacobs died as a result of drowning. Her family and the coroner have been informed of her death and an inquest will be opened in due course.

Police are renewing their appeal for information as the investigation into Mrs Jacobs’s death continues. Detectives want to speak to anyone who was in the area of Needham Lake between 4pm Saturday 19th February and 8am Sunday 20th February, particularly in the early hours of Sunday morning, and anyone who was at Wissett Lake between 4pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.

Anyone with any information should call the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Major Investigation Team at Police Headquarters on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
