Police are investigating after a man had a substance sprayed in his face in Redhill.

Officers say some of it also affected a baby.

It happened at a house in Timperley Gardens last night.

Officers think the suspect had called about a mobile phone for sale that'd been advertised online.

He then launched the attack before stealing the phone.

The victim and a baby were checked in hospital and detectives are trying to work out what the substance was.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Parker said:

“This is an incident we are taking extremely seriously given the intent shown by the attacker in using a spray. Fortunately this has not caused any immediate harm to the victims, although we are continuing to test what the substance is.

“We understand that this will be alarming news, but I would like to reassure the public we are doing all we can to trace this person. We are sure that someone may have seen the attacker leave the area and hope that anyone with any information will call us. If you did see the man described, please call 101 and quote the reference number PR/P18094959.

“At this stage there are no other reports that link to this incident, however I would urge anyone selling items online to take steps, where possible, to make sure you are safe when meeting a buyer. We appreciate this may not always be practical, but if you can, meet in a public place, make sure someone else is with you or use online payment facilities and post items where possible.”
