Brighton Marathon Sun April 15th 2012

The 3rd Brighton Marathon took place on Sunday 15th April. Get the latest.

Thousands of people lined the streets to watch up to 15,000 people take part in one of the UK's biggest marathon events.

A new course record was set at the Brighton Marathon as Kenya's Peter Some knocked more than four minutes off his old time, finishing the race in 2:12:01, race organisers said.

The 21-year-old men's winner said: "I was very happy with the course but I found it very hilly, there were a lot of undulations.

"It is my fourth marathon and second hardest course. The weather was very good, but the wind was too strong.

"I would like to come back to Brighton next year. My goal today was to break the course record.''

A race spokesman added that Belarus's Sviatlana Kouhan slashed five minutes off the previous women's best with 2:29:36.

Danny Miller, 34, from Hove, not only raised money for charity but set a world record for the longest consecutive moonwalk, the dance move synonymous with Michael Jackson, when he hit 9.5 miles about five hours after setting off.

Updating people through Twitter, he said: "Just hit 9.5 miles :) #Brighton @BrightonMarathn #moonwalk Guinness will confirm the World Record for the longest consecutive moonwalk.''

Nick Wood, from Brighton, who has recently recovered from meningitis, ran the race in a suit of armour weighing 100lbs to raise money for the Meningitis Trust and BBA, a Delhi-based charity that rescues children and young girls abducted and forced into factories and domestic service, race organisers said.

The third Brighton Marathon began in Preston Park at 9am and was officially started by Brighton and Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet.

He said: "I am delighted to have been invited to start this year's Brighton Marathon.

"The event has already become an important event in the city's sporting calendar, as well as proving to be a very popular event with runners from the UK and beyond. It will be an honour to start this year's race.''

Commonwealth champion, John Kelai, also of Kenya, was a detached third in 2:12:43 while the inaugural Brighton champion, Mongolia's Serod Batochir, also finished inside the old record with 2:13:01.

Kelai said: "The course was really hilly and it was windy, but I felt very strong and I was pleased with how it went.''

The course took runners out to Ovingdean and back through the city to Shoreham Power Station on the Hove border, before finishing in Madeira Drive, Brighton.

A spokesman for the marathon said the race is expected to make about £5 million for charity and the same amount is spent in Brighton and Hove over the weekend.

Heart spoke to Gus Poyet who started the race, Tim Hutchings who is the race director and Dan Lawson who's running eight marathons in 48 hours.
