Hove Pensioners Death Not Murder

This is the statement issued by Sussex Police on Wednesday January 6th.

The death of a woman in The Drive, Hove, in the early hours of Thursday 3 January is no longer being treated as suspicious by police.


Following a thorough investigation detectives have stood down from bail a 49-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of the murder of 88-year-old Evelyn Stevens and no further action will be taken against him.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Pollard, of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: "Following a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs Stevens, and after receiving the results of forensic examinations, I am satisfied there is no evidence to conclude her death was suspicious.

"Although exactly what happened on that night is still unclear the police investigation will now be closed and a report sent to HM Coroner for an inquest.

"Our thoughts remain with the friends and family of Mrs Stevens as they continue to seek answers about how she died."

Shortly before 7am on Thursday 3 January the body of Mrs Stevens was found outside her flat in Baltimore Court, The Drive. An investigation into her death was launched by Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team.
