Hove Pensioners Death Not Murder

This is the statement issued by Sussex Police on Wednesday January 6th.

The death of a woman in The Drive, Hove, in the early hours of Thursday 3 January is no longer being treated as suspicious by police.

Following a thorough investigation detectives have stood down from bail a 49-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of the murder of 88-year-old Evelyn Stevens and no further action will be taken against him.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Pollard, of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: "Following a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs Stevens, and after receiving the results of forensic examinations, I am satisfied there is no evidence to conclude her death was suspicious.

"Although exactly what happened on that night is still unclear the police investigation will now be closed and a report sent to HM Coroner for an inquest.

"Our thoughts remain with the friends and family of Mrs Stevens as they continue to seek answers about how she died."
