London - Brighton Bike Ride Is Back

Thirty Thousand Cyclists have pedalled through Sussex and Surrey on the annual BHF London to Brighton bike ride, but they are arriving in what some have described as a 'third world country.'

Rubbish on the streets of Brighton Drizzle greeted the riders as they swept into Surrey and made their way down through Mid Sussex before making the gruelling climb up Ditchling Beacon and into Brighton.

But for many the most unpleasant part of the ride was when they arrived in the city. The strike over pay and allowances by refuse and recycling workers means litter and communal bins have not been emptied. Many are overflowing and there are black bags in the streets.

The GMB warned on Saturday that the city would look like a bomb site by Monday morning. Residents have described the scene as an 'embarrassment,' some riders have tweeted that it is like cycling into a 'third world country.'

Riders on Fox Hill in Haywards Heath Elsewhere riders were cheered on by people lining the roads, as expected there were some traffic problems at major junctions. Haywards Heath was particularly slow and people reported having trouble getting in and out of Brighton and Hove.

It is the 36th year of the 54 mile ride which is in aid of the British Heart Foundation and is estimated to have raised nearly £40m over the years.

The BHF has to make arrangements for getting the riders home. Southern Rail does not allow bikes on its trains on the day due to the huge number involved and the limited space for cycles in their carriages.
