Firefighters at the scene

An investigation is underway after a huge fire which ripped through a children's nursery in Hove.

Around 50 firefighters were tackling the flames which engulfed Cbabiesafe in Palmeira Avenue last night.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called just after 9pm and sent eight fire engines to the scene.

It's understood to have started in the porch and spread to other parts of the building.

A spokesman told Heart: "At the height of the incident eight fire engines were at the scene, including two from West Sussex, along with the aerial ladder platform, the command support unit and officers.

"Crews are damping down and turning over to ensure the fire is completely out with no further hot spots.

"The building has been badly damaged by fire and checks will have to take place to decide whether it is safe to enter."

No-one was hurt, but several neighbouring homes had to be evacuated as a precaution.
