Founded in the 11th century, Arundel Castle has played host to a huge range of celebrations and events over the centuries and 2011 is no exception.
From Tuesday 26 to Sunday 31 July the Castle grounds will echo to the clash of lances as the mounted knights Destrier Pro Historical Events joust for honour and glory. Set against the backdrop of the Castle will be an authentic medieval encampment, complete with armourer, fletcher and surgeon to attend to all the needs of the knights. Archers, men-at-arms, cooks and craftsmen will all be available to watch and talk to as well as the men of steel themselves.
The exquisite Collector Earl’s Garden will be the setting for two of Shakespeare’s best loved plays from Thursday 25 to Saturday 27 August. The ill-starred lovers of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ will be portrayed by the GB Theatre Company on the Thursday and Saturday. Set in Verona, a city torn apart by the clashes between the two feuding families of the Montagues and Capulets, the struggle by the young lovers to overcome the mutual loathing is touchingly depicted against the contemporary design of the Italianate Garden. Friday 26 August sees the comedic madness of ‘Twelfth Night’. With the confusion caused by identical twins, the ideals of love and the most pompous character ever portrayed on stage, the play explores the painfully funny side of love.
Home to the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for 850 years, Arundel Castle offers a captivating mix of formidable ancient Castle, sumptuous stately home and glorious gardens. An ideal day out for all the family.
