Fewer Drivers Risk Shiplake Crossing

Extra safety barriers are going up at a level crossing in Oxfordshire despite figures showing the number of drivers ignoring the warning lights has almost halved in the last 6 months.

Network Rail hope to have the barriers up at Shiplake near Henley by the end of the year.

Transport police started a safety campaign at the crossing in November 2011 after a near miss but two weeks later a man was seriously injured after his car was hit by a train.

Since last April there have been 13 incidents of drivers not obeying the barriers - 8 in the first 6 months and 5 in the last part of the financial year.

Officers say they'll dish out harsher punishments like a fine or a day in court for motorists and pedestrians who ignore the risks
